monocoque [mon-uh-kohk, -kok]

noun:
1 a type of boat, aircraft, or rocket construction in which the shell carries most of the stresses
2 (automotive) a type of vehicular construction in which the body is combined with the chassis as a single unit
adjective:
of or relating to the design characteristic of a monocoque

Examples:

The figure is a best early estimate for repairs the car, and could yet go up - Red Bull are still looking into whether the monocoque can be repaired or will have to be replaced with a new one. (Andrew Benson, British Grand Prix crash to cost Red Bull £1.3m, says Christian Horner, BBC, July 2021)

The monocoque is the largest single carbon fiber piece in the automotive industry, according to the company, dramatically cutting weight and improving safety. (Sean O'Kane, Rimac reveals the Nevera, a 1,900-horsepower electric hypercar, Yje Verge, June 2021)

Using a unibody, or monocoque, construction makes these Mustangs stiffer and lighter than a body on frame design. (Karl Brauer, Test-Driving The 'New' 1968 Ford Mustang By Revology Cars, Forbes, November 2024)

The front section, including the cockpit survival cell and the jet engine's air intake, is a carbon fiber monocoque, similar to a top flight race car (and now the occasional road car). (Jonathan M Gitlin, Bloodhound SSC: How do you build a car capable of 1,000mph?, Ars Technica, November 2018)

Origin:
French: mono- + coque, shell (from Old French, from Latin coccum, berry, from Greek kokkos) (The Free Dictionary)

Long-haulers! We have four recipients who still need pinch hitters to claim their requests. Please help if you can!

If you can't claim a pinch hit yourself, please share our call for pinch hitters with any relevant communities you may be part of.

To everyone: Whether or not you can help with the remaining pinch hits, please help make reveals go smoothly by doing the following things:
  • Check your recipient's Do-Not-Wants. Yes, this could be an awkward time to discover a point of conflict or ambiguity, but better now than on reveals. I am still happy to pass on questions to recipients.

  • Check that the version you uploaded is the version you intended to upload. Please make sure your work is checked over for spelling, grammar, coherence, and polish. Betas are not mandatory in this exchange. A minimum standard of presentation is mandatory. So if you know you're not the best at picking out your own typos, tense switches, or when you've drawn impossible anatomy, please seek feedback. (See beta post)

  • Consider when you will be able to comment on your gift. You may have had original plans that were scuppered by schedule delays - I'm sorry about that. If all goes well, the anonymous period of the exchange will be between 21 March and 4 April. Please try to comment within that period; if that's not possible, please try to comment soon after. You are also very welcome to comment on other works as soon as reveals happen.

  • Check that your work is set to allow comments. You don't have to enable guest comments, but please ensure your recipient can comment on your work, at least during the anon period. If this is a problem, please discuss it with me at mod.modzilla@gmail.com

If you feel like earning Extra Exchange Bonus Points, more beta volunteers are always welcome. And you might not have time to consume a canon to fulfil a pinch hit, but if a requested canon has caught your eye, why not try picking it up for a future exchange?

Treats are also welcome for all prompts! Treats can be as short as you like. If any pinch hitters choose to leave prompts, you can find them here.

I was writing up a navel-gazing post about grief (tl;dr turned out I think "oh MM would like that!" more often than I would have suspected) and it somehow spiraled into how I could make beautiful and accessible no-Javascript footnotes CSS given the Dreamwidth CSS restrictions. This resulted in me, among other things, reading the DW codebase to see all the CSS restrictions, and then finally after a couple of hours getting my perfect CSS, even though it's completely useless because it will only work when reading in my journal style.

(ETA: That's only because I'm being a perfectionist about placement for the purposes of this exercise, and DW doesn't allow absolute positioning in inline HTML.)

(Also even making this post resulted in me reading the code for Perl's Text::Markdown since I couldn't remember which code block syntax it used.

Hyperfixation FTW!

CSS, FWIW )

* Stream for Oops All Goalies game tonight will be here. Starts in about 2 hours from when I am making this post.

* Newest squid is NCAA path and minored in theater? He did contemporary dance to round out his minor? Huh, we might only have him until the end of the season, but he could be interesting if he sticks around.

McCann is claiming they are putting McMann next to him in the locker room and are also putting them on the same line. We are trying to figure out if he is kidding. He doesn't typically kid, he showed an emotion in front of the press once in Vancouver over a decade ago and is still paying for it. But also McMann being a first liner is not what people are expecting. We'll see in a few days.

Yesterday I got to explain to a slightly confused Spaniard that "condominium" in the US means the type of multi-unit residential building that is apparently standard here, where each unit is owned by the person who lives in it, and that the type of building that's owned by a company which then rents out the units to residents, is so much seen as the default in the US that it doesn't have a specific name.

(The difference in corporate attitudes to profit-making that this implies is fascinating to me - I feel like the overall sentiment, not just in real estate but in everything lately, is that renters who pay over and over are easier to squeeze money out of than customers who buy once and then own the product. But apparently here the main model is that a company buys land, builds a residential building, sells off each unit to an individual buyer who presumably intends to live in it themself, then moves on to the next project. However, does that mean that finding housing is less of a struggle? No, it's just different.)
