a bunch of stuff

Due to migraines and ridiculous allergies lately, I've been sleeping much more and haven't been online or writing as much. Pair that with how I wasn't going anywhere as much due to all the snow sticking around and making parking less reliable, I have less new stuff to talk about.

Even with higher temperatures and a lot of rain, we still have some mounds of the stuff, but parking is getting easier to find.

It's Irish soda bread season in NY. The Stop & Shop version, heretically, didn't have caraway seeds, but Trader Joe's did, even if I cringe at them calling theirs the Blarney Scone.

I had my annual eye exam last week, something especially important for someone with Chiari, which means they're very concerned with how my retinas are doing. For some reason, the pupil of my left eye stayed dilated hours longer than my right. They can't have put that much more dilating fluid in my left eye. My youngest niece saw it when I picked her up from college and was very concerned for me.

I received a notice from Kia of a recall for my Forte. It said they first sent a notice for it to the original owner in 2021 but nothing was done. So, I got this voluntary emissions and transmission recall done as well as two anti-theft things for free. The Kia service people seemed decent and competent, unlike all of the Hyundai people I used to deal with.

A phenomenon I love in fandoms for things with massive, sprawling canons is when you get people who have Areas of Expertise and people consult Subject Matter Experts (their friends who have become obsessed with slightly different parts of canon) like it's academia. Wonderful, no notes.

This morning both computers displayed the quality standards of their developers.

The Mac did its usual thing. Safari had crashed, taking my windows with it. Not notable enough to record, since it happens multiple times a week, ever since "upgrading" to Sequoia, aka MacOS 15.5 (24F74).

The Kubuntu system had two windows/processes/apps that could not be given focus, and/or weren't responsive to being selected, and farthermore had ceased to receive input from the net. One was ProtonMail and the other was Discord. The system had been up for 7 days. It had also had multiple issues with the rsibreak app in the period it had been up; I'd been killing and restarting it when they occurred.

After rebooting the Kubuntu system, ProtonMail was once again functional, but Discord was demanding that I update it yet again - this being a manual process that also involves using a web browser. Sadly, thanks to the non-functional session management software, all my browser windows will appear on the same virtual desktop, creating a PITA nuisance to sort out, even though I was able to look through each virtual desktop before rebooting, and kill off any unwanted windows that were among the lucky few that were visible (and thus easily selectable) in the horizontal, thumbnail-including set of firefox windows available to select.

It looks like Canonical is consistent - they force updates approximately weekly, thanks to firefox both being a snap and changing that frequently. And their idea of "stable enough to ship" is that things might work for about a week before needing to be restarted.

This is not the sort of thing I want to encounter early in the morning before the kettle boils.

On the good side, my new backup disk on the linux system (not yet in use for backups) mounted correctly at boot.

And it only took 8 months, and a number of hours I will not disclose. Though, to be fair, since I unexpectedly got into the multi-player, a lot of the total hours actually represent me reading a book while waiting to be summoned.

Dark Souls is slow, janky, eccentric, flawed, wilfully obscure about some of its mechanics, and one of the best games I've ever played. I am in love. Ask me anything.

i used to be super active on livejournal, mainly in the icon community. i made a dreamwidth account as livejournal was fading, but i didn't really connect to the site and with irl changes i ended up leaving this part of the internet altogether. i've been reminiscing and have wanted to get back into "journaling", so i'm giving dreamwidth a proper go this time around.

name: laura

age: 30

i mostly post about: life updates and the occasional book review. i dealt with a lot of changes last year and a major loss at the end of january, so i'm navigating this new chapter (that sounds so corny) and just want to document the ups & downs as i experience them.

my posting schedule tends to be: for now, i'd say sporadic, maybe a few times a week.

my interests: reading, bookish content (new/upcoming releases, challenges, etc), horror, thanatology (see: Caitlin Doughty), arts/crafts, trying new recipes/cooking, hockey (nhl & pwhl), the sims 4, historical facts, theatre, concerts, cleaning/weekend reset videos (specific fandoms) lord of the rings, the boys, sailor moon, three days grace, prison break, jujutsu kaisen, tokyo revengers, schitts creek, supernatural, gundam seed, mcu

my dealbreakers are: aggressive or continuous political content; i'm well aware of what's happening in the world and i have no problem with people who want to discuss or vent, but i have no desire in befriending anyone who is consumed by politics (especially whatever trump is up to). anti-lgbt, conservatives/traditionalists, ableists.

before adding me, you should know: i have social anxiety; i have good days and bad days. i might come off as standoffish, but i promise i'm not. i love reading/hearing about other people's experiences and getting a glimpse into their lives. i'm just too nervous to approach them lol
